Search for "n8n AI" and you hit two products that share a name and not much else. n8n ships its own AI nodes. Those nodes run as steps inside a workflow when the automation itself needs a model. n8nChat is a Chrome extension. Firefox is available too. You type a prompt. It generates or edits the workflow graph on the official n8n canvas.

If you wanted a model to help you build the graph, you are in the right place. If you wanted n8n to call a model during a run, stay with n8n's AI nodes. You can use both on the same canvas. One writes the workflow. The other is a node inside it.

n8n's AI nodes vs a chat that builds the graph

n8n's AI features live in the node library. You add an agent, a model node, or a tool the same way you add Slack or HTTP. You configure credentials, prompts, and memory on those nodes. That is n8n. It is not n8nChat.

n8nChat adds a chat next to the editor you already have open. You describe the workflow. The extension places nodes and connections on that canvas. You can ask it to change what is already there. The result is still an n8n workflow. Triggers, credentials, and execution stay in n8n.

That is the whole product claim. A prompt in, a graph on the official canvas, then you edit. There is no second designer. There is no hosted n8n behind this site.

Not a replacement for n8n.io

n8nChat is not n8n.io. It does not host workflows. It does not run them. It does not replace n8n Cloud or a self-hosted editor. You need n8n first. Open the editor you already use. Then use the chat to generate or edit the graph in place.

Bring your own OpenAI or Gemini key

n8nChat does not ship a bundled model. You paste your own OpenAI or Gemini API key. Usage bills to that key. If you do not have one, create it with OpenAI or Google, then add the extension.
